We can’t all choose the perfect car, but no matter what we drive, we can improve our emissions with the fuel we choose to put in the tank. Each gallon of unleaded gas creates about 20 pounds of C02. Gas blended with just 10% ethanol (a bio fuel made from renewable or recycled sources) can produce 1/3 of the pollution of regular unleaded fuel. But some stations have options with 15% ethanol—a fuel usable by most cars 2001 and newer according to the EPA. Shop your local gas stations, find a reputable bio fuel blend and support the higher Ethanol brands. You may not be quite ready to splurge for that all-electric or hybrid model, but by paying attention at the pump, you can start reducing your vehicle’s emissions today.
